The first time that we visited the orphanage it was a real bitter-sweet experience. Bitter in the fact that it is heart-wrenching to see children left in need of an orphanage and deprived of real family life through no fault of their own, and sweet in the fact of seeing how well cared for they are, and so obviously loved by the nuns and volunteers who care for them. This was one of the most humbling and beautiful experiences of our lives, to have seen so many giving freely to those who need it and our drive home was in complete silence thinking of how lucky we were to have been raised with so much.
The orphanage at any given time has approximately 25 children aged between 2 and 9 years old. They also accommodate babies who are moved from a home in Guadalajara as soon as they can walk and within hours more babies will replace the ones who leave the Guadalajara location.
Twenty of the children have been adopted in the past year with the hope of at least that same number in the coming year.
The orphanage is totally dependent on donations to allow it to function.
We visit as often as possible with donations of food and clothing when possible. We are also trying to collect cash to help with utility bills etc. and health and dental care.
Casa de las Flores is now available as a drop-in location, where people can leave of donations of non-perishable items of food and clothes etc. that will be greatly appreciated by the orphanage.
